u12 vs. Ampthill match day

Mark Scott

Cold! Turning hot

Cold start to the morning.

The Rhinos on the right-hand-pitch took no time to get into the game and had Ampthill on the back foot with some really strong carries and impressive rucking and played great rugby, bringing the training drills into play on match day. Leo carried really well, using his impressive speed and strength to drive deep into the defence.Thomas playing really well in the 10 position with good ball movement and using the blind to get two on one. Josh put in a captains display leading by example with rucking and mauling that was outstanding, plus huge carries into the heart of a strong Ampthill defence.Griff scored a try that was possibly the best of the morning side stepping and out sprinting the entire opposition. Gillie really carrying well and using the hand off to great effect to ride the tackle and put away three players for try’s. Howard showed a clean pair of heals to sprint the length of the pitch busting through tackles to score a great try. Otis put in a huge shift tackling, rucking, mauling, turning balls over and a great alround display not a foot wrong. Luke showed great courage taking on and beating a number of huge Ampthill players, carrying hard and putting in bone rattling tackles. Ronnie again a great morning of rugby showing real skill and strength in both attack and defence. Kayden again great energy and coming from depth in attack to ride two tackles, held up short of the line by three defenders, using his strength to present quick ball that went wide for a try. Aran a complete display of rugby turning over multiple balls, stripping, picking and going, scoring some fantastic try’s had the whole of Ampthill at times just tackling shadows and eating dust. Flynn put in a huge display in today and some of the best rugby he has played, putting his had up as first receiver, carrying hard and fast into the Ampthill defence and driving towards the try line with four defenders trying to bring him down. Lucas again showed what low tackles and never giving up can do lifting the team and putting his hand up as first receiver. Well done to all the boys again a pleasure to ref and coach.

Good play from our Bulls team against a strong Ampthill side on the left-hand pitch
Forward play was the strength i thought, good support of the carrier, much better retention of possession at the ruck than we've seen previously.
A couple of times we got it to Rudy & Ciaran on the wing in space and they made good ground.
Work ons are moving the ball away from the ruck quicker. We're not the biggest team and often struggle to withstand a well organised counter ruck.
Bulls started tackling too high but learnt it was more effective to go lower. Great half time talk from Captain Stan, to succeed they needed to get the ball wide, and want it more, but as they got tired, this faded and Ampthill maintained their approach and got a few more tries
