This was the first fixture of the season for the U10s, and the first away fixture. Thanks to all the parents and players for travelling and for the early start.
We fielded a massive 50 players against the 23 from Enfield. The format was a round robin of fixtures across four pitches, we had five teams, with subs, and they had three.
Enfield are a strong side, we last played them away in a triangular fixture at Hertford. Overall, I would say that the Hitchin sides were stronger than Enfield and outscored them well, although Enfield had some very strong individual players who we struggled to handle at times. Equally we have some very strong players that Enfield failed to handle. Hitchin performed particularly well in moving the ball around, recycling and evasion. There were some very fast feet on display! Our efforts in developing tackling technique are paying dividends but still more work to do, especially getting low, applying the ring of steel and continuing to pump the legs. Both sides are developing the ruck and there was somewhat limited use of the ruck but it was a good start. For the first time we also used the uncontested scrum, awarded for a knock on or forward pass. We will do more work on this throughout the season.
In previous seasons we've started off a little bit rusty but with several training sessions under the belt this season the teams were strong and brave, agile and quick, and performed excellently. Well done everyone, a great start to the season!
