On Saturday 5th April 2025 Hitchin Men's team had 3 teams due to play simultaneously, a feat that had not occurred since 2022. This was in no small part due to 11 Hitchin Colts making the step up from Youth to Adult rugby.
This season has seen excellent collaboration between the Men's team and the Colts. Training together on a Thursday evening has seen the two squads working well, combining experience, skills, pace and enthusiasm.
A special mention must go to James Akrill (Mens 1st) for all his hard word with the squad. He has been supported by head coach Gary Ayres & 1st team captain Fraser McGown. Colts coaches Ricky Pitcock and Paul Watson embraced this opportunity and soon found the players were beginning to take to the idea of playing Men's rugby. They were relishing the opportunity of playing alongside those that they had trained with.
The Colts played well against a well structured Royston team. Of the 29 points scored by Hitchin, 15 (3 tries) were scored by Colts on their debut. Despite losing the match the boys showed great character and played throughout with a smile on their faces and certainly did not look out of place. Congratulations to (L-R); Harry W, Troy L, Jimi AA, Joe S, Archie P, Brandon T, Ollie N, Johnny H, Luke HD & Teddy T. A special mention to Will D who was voted player of the match!!
This is exciting times at Hitchin RFC and we hope this is just the beginning of our youth players representing our Senior sides.
